Joe Biden Diagnosed With Advanced Prostate Cancer: A Nation Reacts

Former President Joe Biden, 82, has been diagnosed with stage 4 prostate cancer, his office confirmed on Sunday. The cancer has already spread to his bones, making it one of the more serious forms of the disease. The diagnosis followed reports of urinary symptoms, leading doctors to discover a small nodule on his prostate. A Gleason score of 9—indicating an aggressive cancer—was cited in the medical statement.

Despite the severity, Biden’s team stated the cancer is hormone-sensitive, which opens doors for treatment options like hormone-blocking therapies. Experts, including Dr. Judd Moul from Duke University, noted that while metastatic prostate cancer isn't curable, many men still live 5 to 10 years or more with proper treatment.

Biden, who left office in January as the oldest-serving U.S. president, had already faced growing scrutiny over his age and mental sharpness during the 2024 campaign. Pressure from within his own party and a difficult debate performance led to him dropping out of the race, endorsing Kamala Harris, who later lost to Donald Trump.

Reactions to the news were swift and largely supportive. President Trump posted a heartfelt message on social media offering his best wishes, while Kamala Harris praised Biden’s strength and resilience, calling him a "fighter" and expressing hope for a full recovery.

Since stepping down, Biden has maintained a lower profile, residing in Delaware while working quietly on his post-presidency plans. But renewed scrutiny followed after Axios released audio from Biden’s 2023 special counsel interview, highlighting moments of memory struggle—fueling political discourse once again.

Though his memory has been debated, Biden remained defiant. In a past interview with The View, he stated: “They are wrong. There’s nothing to sustain that.” Earlier in 2024, his doctors had also declared him “fit to serve.”

The diagnosis adds to the Biden family's long history of health battles—from Joe’s own brain aneurysms in the 1980s to the tragic loss of his son Beau Biden in 2015 to brain cancer.

Biden addressed the nation via social media, posting a photo with wife Jill Biden, stating: “Cancer touches us all… Thank you for lifting us up with love and support.”
